As bears cross from neighboring Russia into Mongolia, finding ways for people and wildlife to coexist safely has become an important concern.
What innovative ideas and technologies are being developed around the world to address this challenge?
To explore potential solutions, we conducted a preliminary search of patent databases using keywords related to non-harmful methods of deterring wild bears, which have become increasingly visible in both urban and rural areas of Mongolia, as well as preventive measures to help protect the public. Focusing on recent patents that are currently in force, we came across several interesting technological solutions:
– Personal Protection: Portable devices designed to deter bears and help protect people.
– Artificial Intelligence: Camera-based systems that use image recognition to detect animals and trigger early warnings or deterrent mechanisms.
– Electric Fencing: Portable solutions designed to prevent or restrict wildlife from entering certain areas.
– Genetic Technologies: Methods using bear DNA and genetic markers to identify species and study genetic diversity.
– Habitat Protection: Innovative approaches to preserving the natural habitats of endangered species while reducing harmful human interference.
This preliminary exploration was a reminder that patent databases are not only a resource for investigating technical solutions, but also a valuable window into innovations addressing pressing social and environmental challenges.
These are just a few examples identified through a preliminary search. The actual effectiveness of each technology, its feasibility, and its suitability for Mongolia’s conditions would require further investigation.
Perhaps some of the ideas already documented in patent databases could one day contribute to solutions that enable humans and wildlife to coexist more safely.
